Visiting Dubrovnik? Check Out These 5 Game of Thrones Filming Locations

All Game of Thrones super fans know that the beautiful city of Dubrovnik in Croatia was one of the show’s main filming locations.  Cersei’s walk of shame, Joffrey’s name-day tournament, and even Daenerys’ visit to Qarth were all filmed here.  Now that the television series has finished, numerous Game of Thrones tour companies have launched in the city.  But what if you’re visiting Dubrovnik and want to explore these locations at your own pace?  Well, we have you covered.  Here are five of Dubrovnik’s Game of Thrones filming locations that you won’t want to miss!

Visiting Dubrovnik Old Town

Lokrum Island

Lokrum Island is a lush, forested island, located just 15 minutes by boat from Dubrovnik’s Old City Harbor.  The island was used for many scenes, but most notably was used as the location of Qarth.  Many of Daenerys’ scenes in series two were filmed on the island, including at the monastery and the botanical gardens.  Lokrum Island is such a gorgeous place that we highly recommend sticking around for a few days if you’re able.  It’s the perfect place to kick back and relax.

Ethnographic Museum

The Ethnographic Museum is home to some really fascinating artifacts, but its filming location may surprise you.  This museum was actually the location of Littlefinger’s brothel, a place we saw regularly during the early seasons.  In season 4, the Ethnographic Museum was featured in the scene where Oberyn Martell met Tyrion and declared he was after revenge for the deaths of his family members.  And, the street outside the museum was used in season 5 when the High Septor was forced by the Sparrows to walk naked through the streets.  These streets are a quiet, residential area in real life.  Still, the museum and its exterior are both worth checking out when visiting Dubrovnik.

Minčeta Tower

Dubrovnik’s, Minčeta Tower was the filming place of the House of the Undying in season 2 of Game of Thrones.  When Daenerys’ baby dragons are taken from her, she desperately searches the tower in an attempt to rescue them.  Luckily, the entrance to the tower is much easier to find in real life than it was for Jorah in the show. And, tourists can experience some truly stunning views if they climb to the top.

Jesuit Staircase

One of the most memorable scenes in the whole television show was filmed on the Jesuit Staircase.  Remember when Cersei, head shaved, was forced to walk through the streets while Unella shouted “shame” in her ears?  The beginning of the scene started atop the Jesuit Staircase, progressed through the city’s Old Town, and ended at Fort Lovrijenac.  Traditionally full of street vendors and bustling crowds, this is not only a great filming location, but a fantastic place to explore on foot when visiting Dubrovnik.

Fort Lovrijenac

Fort Lovrijenac is a majestic looking fort, located on the western side of the city’s Old Town.  Dozens of scenes were filmed here as it was used as the main filming location for the Red Keep in King’s Landing.  Lannister fans visiting Dubrovnik will be in heaven as they will get to see where Jaime and Cersei filmed some of their most well known scenes inside the keep.  Of course, the stunning views over the ocean aren’t bad either!

Other destinations well worth checking out when visiting Dubrovnik include Pile Harbor, where the Lannisters said goodbye to Myrcella, Pile Gate, where Joffrey was mobbed, and Gradac Park where Margaery and Joffrey’s wedding took place
