1. Riga Art Nouveau Museum
The Riga Art Nouveau Museum is one of the only museums in the entire region that focuses solely on the history of Art Nouveau. Built in 1903 as a private house, its stunning architecture is the first thing you’ll notice as you approach the building. Once inside, you’ll find Art Nouveau exhibits that were either manufactured or used in Latvia in early 1900s. 2. The KGB Building – Museum of the Occupation of Latvia
Known as ‘The Corner House’, the KGB Building was the Soviet KGB’s Latvian headquarters during the Occupation. A visit to the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia gives you a sobering insight into the history of the country and the many injustices that were suffered by the Latvian people. Undoubtedly one of the most interesting and educational places you’ll visit as you travel Latvia, admission to the Museum currently requires just a voluntary donation. Guided tours of the cell blocks beneath the building are priced at 10.00 EUR per person.
3. Riga Motor Museum
If you love cars or you’re eager to learn more about the evolution of the automotive industry in the Baltic states, a trip to the Riga Motor Museum should be at the top of your ‘must-do’ list. Featuring more than 100 unique antique vehicles, as well as bicycles and mopeds, the museum does a fantastic job of charting Latvian history through the transport industry. At the time of writing, tickets are just 10 EUR per person for adults and 5 EUR per child, with family, senior and student discounts also available.
4. Riga Zoo
Situated on the shores of Lake Kisezers, Riga Zoo is a fun-filled attraction that makes for a great day out. Tram 11 takes you from the centre of Riga close to the Zoo and you’ll benefit from fantastic views of the city as you travel Latvia. The Zoo is typically open from 10am to 6pm in the summer and 10am to 4pm in the winter. However, you can remain on the grounds for one hour after the ticket offices close. With more than 500 species and 4,000 animals to see, you’ll need all the time you can spare to make the most of your time at Riga Zoo.
